TEST PREPARATION IN NYC:
SAT Subject Tests
As of June 2021, SAT Subject Tests are no longer offered in the U.S. or internationally. Advanced Placement (AP) exams are a great substitute for students in Park Slope, the Upper West Side, and other NYC neighborhoods who wish to show colleges their prowess in a particular academic subject. CATES offers comprehensive tutoring support for a wide variety of AP tests to help you put your best foot forward in college applications.
AP Exams are standardized tests that assess how well you understand the content and skills of a specific AP course. Most AP courses have an end-of-year exam, but some have different ways to assess what you’ve learned, such as AP Art and Design, which requires students from NYC to submit a portfolio of work for scoring. These exams are only offered for a 2-week period in May and if you get a high enough score, you may earn college credit or even a lower college tuition bill.
Similar to the SAT Subject Tests, there are AP tests that cover a range of subjects from Biology to Music Theory. Although there are currently over 38 AP test options, few high schools in NYC’s neighborhoods offer classes in all subjects. AP exams are graded on a scale of 1 to 5. While every college is different, most will not accept AP scores for credit unless you have at least a 4 on the exam.
AP scores won’t affect your high school GPA or your chances of college admission. However, high AP scores can lead to college credit. Remember that every school in the Big Apple is unique. Some will not accept credit unless you get a 5, while some colleges will not accept them at all. Be sure to check with your top schools to understand how they deal with AP scores.
AP tests in NYC are administered by The College Board, which also administers the SAT. However, not all AP tests are offered at every school. If your school has an AP Coordinator, speak with them directly about registration. If your school does not have an AP Coordinator, you must contact AP Services by March 1 to obtain the contact information of your nearest AP Coordinator. You can find the number for AP services on the College Board website.

My daughter worked with CATES to prepare for the Math II SAT Subject Test. The program provided a tremendous boost to her confidence in her math ability, and not only did this help her secure stellar scores on the test, it also helped to raise her grade average in calculus from a 79 to a 94. Her tutor was patient and thorough and helped her break down tough concepts in a way that was easy for her to understand. Our family is extremely pleased with the support we received and we refer anyone we know looking for test prep and subject tutoring to CATES!
