What Is The LSAT?

LSAT Registration & Cost For NYC-Based Students

To register for the LSAT, you can visit the LSAC website. Here, you will find information about test centers near your area and the criteria for test day. The registration fee for the LSAT is $200, and there are additional service packages to choose from based on your specific test needs such as law school reports.

You may retake the LSAT up to three times in a single testing year which ranges from June 1st to May 31st. Students may also retake it up to five times in the current testing year and five past testing years. The LSAT can only be taken up to seven times over your lifetime. How Difficult Is The LSAT?

LSAT Structure & Format

The LSAT is broken up into two parts. The first part encompasses five 35-minute sections. There is a dedicated section for reading comprehension and one for analytical reasoning, while there are two for logical reasoning. An unscored variable section that is administered to sample questions for new test forms in the future will also be a part of the exam. You will not be sure which section it is so it’s best to treat the entire exam with full focus. Below, we have broken up each section and provided the details you need to know to be prepared on test day.

• Reading Comprehension: This section includes challenging vocabulary and in-depth reading passages. You will be required to understand and analyze different viewpoints, tones, and information that may not be explicit within the passages. This section will challenge your ability to actively retain, process, and apply the information taken from the readings.
• Analytical Reasoning: During this section, you will be required to apply reasoning skills to a wide range of scenarios presented in the reading passage. Being able to properly infer and use your best judgment in hypothetical scenarios will boost your score in this section.
• Logical Reasoning: Testing your critical thinking and analyzation skills will be the primary focus of this section. You will be required to identify and draw information from various points within the argument, conclusion, or assumption presented to you in a rational form.

The second part of the exam is an unscored writing portion. The LSAT writing section is administered on your computer through a proctoring software that you can install at home. The writing prompt will present you with a decision-based issue and you will be required to present an argument defending your specific action plan and viewpoint. The goal of this writing prompt is to show universities your persuasive and argumentative skills which reflect on your ability to be organized and clear throughout the sample.

How To Calculate Your LSAT Score

The number of correct answers will determine your LSAT score and you are not penalized for incorrect answers, so it’s always best to guess even if you are unsure. The total number of correct answers is equal to your raw score and this will then be converted into your LSAT score for yourself and universities to see.

Your score can range from 120 to 180, with 150 being the average for most LSAT test-takers. Your score will also be presented in a percentile rank which tells universities how well you did in comparison to other LSAT test-takers. Upon receiving your scores, you will also be given your LSAT score band which estimates your proficiency in the skills that you were tested on during the exam.
