What is the GMAT?
The Graduate Management Admission Test is a computer-adaptive test (CAT) that most business schools require applicants to submit. All test-takers will need to pay a $250 fee when registering for the GMAT. The GMAT evaluates an MBA applicant’s abilities in various parameters such as problem-solving, logic, and reasoning. The GMAT provides business schools with common measures of an applicants’ preparedness for graduate-level academic work. As a computer-adaptive test, the GMAT matches a test-taker’s performance level during the exam depending on whether the candidate answers right or wrong. If a candidate continues to answer questions correctly, the GMAT will automatically increase the level of difficulty for each following question.
What is the GMAT’s Structure?
Lasting three and a half hours with 91 questions in total, the GMAT exam contains four sections:
- Analytical Writing Assessment (30 minutes, 1 essay): Measures an MBA-candidate’s ability to think critically and effectively communicate ideas.
- Integrated Reasoning (30 minutes, 12 questions): Measures a person’s ability to analyze data and evaluate information presented in multiple formats. These questions cover table analysis, two-part analysis, multi-source reasoning, and graphic interpretation.
- Quantitative Reasoning (62 minutes, 31 questions): Measures a person’s ability to analyze data and draw conclusions using reasoning and logic skills. These questions explore data sufficiency and problem-solving.
- Verbal Reasoning (65 minutes, 36 questions): Evaluates an MBA-applicant’s ability to read and understand written material evaluate arguments and correct written material to adhere to standard grammatical rules. Test-takers will encounter questions focusing on unseen passages, sentence correction, and critical reasoning.
Unlike other standardized exams, there is no negative marking on the GMAT for answering questions incorrectly. But the GMAT does not allow test-takers to skip questions, so applicants have to answer all of the questions to complete the exam.
What is a Good GMAT Score?
GMAT scores range between 200 and 800 points, with questions scored in increments of 10. While test-takers will receive scaled scores for each section, the GMAT Total Score encompasses scores from the Quantitative and Verbal sections only. Depending on the MBA program, a good GMAT score may range anywhere from the high 500s to the mid-to-high 700s while elite MBA programs, like Harvard or Wharton, require applicants to score above 720.
