TEST PREP CLASSES
CATES test prep classes help Northern New Jersey students to achieve and extend their potential in standardized tests. Using learning techniques and problem-solving methodologies developed for our private tutoring programs, students engage via in-class instruction and online class communities to improve their mastery of testing content, strategy, and skill.
Classes begin with a diagnostic test, which allows us to build individual student profiles and provides a baseline against which to measure progress. We group students according to their strengths and weaknesses and customize our classes based on their common needs. Our Core curriculum takes students through the content, strategy, and skills they need to ace their test, covering everything from basic grammar and arithmetic through trigonometry and rhetoric to tactics for thought organization and maintaining focus. In most classes, further mock tests give students the opportunity to apply their new skills and allow the class leader to adapt to the students’ changing needs.
ESSAY WORKSHOP
Over three days, Essay Workshop students work with certified admissions counselors and writing experts to craft college essays and supplemental materials, as well as to hone interview skills. Students learn how to engage admissions officers with a coherent personal theme and clearly demonstrate what they have to offer a school or university community. Meanwhile, our team of editors helps students develop their understanding of style, mechanics, and voice.
Each day, students will work with CATES editors and college advisors as they write their personal statement. At the end of each day, students will turn their work in to CATES editors, who will carefully review and critique it. Before the next writing session, students receive individual feedback and coaching.
