What is ADHD?

Previously referred to as attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition where an individual may be hyperactive, impulsive, or unable to control their immediate impulses. Students with ADHD usually display signs early on in their childhood, with symptoms that range from short attention span, restlessness, and/or an inability to focus or listen.

There are also different types of ADHD, each with a variety of symptoms. The DSM-V (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition) recognizes three different types of ADHD: Primarily Inattentive, Primarily Hyperactive-Impulsive, or Combined. Those with Inattentive ADHD tend to have trouble sustaining attention, seem not to listen when spoken to, avoid tasks that require sustained effort, or often lose things they need to complete a task. Girls and women are diagnosed more often with this type of ADHD than boys or men. Testing for ADHD is carried out by a physician who specializes in identifying the signs and symptoms, as there are no diagnostic lab tests available. The degree to which people are affected varies greatly along the LD spectrum.
